Utah Women are Resilient
October 2020
We’re featuring resilient women this month like U.S. Treasurer Ivy Baker Priest. Ivy grew up in the mining town of Bingham, Utah. Despite growing up in poverty and having an unhappy first marriage, she threw her energies into causes she cared about. Ivy worked in politics for decades, especially encouraging women to participate and vote. Even though she ran unsuccessfully for state legislature and U.S. Congress, she continued to find ways to make a difference in politics. This led President Eisenhower to nominate her as U.S. Treasurer, managing complex financial affairs for the United States! Both as U.S. and California Treasurer, she used her position to bring a spotlight to charitable causes.
