125 Years of Utah Women in Government

November 3, 2021

Today marks the 125th anniversary of Utah women’s first elections to government! Our first election after statehood was the first time Utah women could run for public office, and Dr. Martha Hughes Cannon was the first woman elected to a state senate in the United States! Her statue will soon represent Utah in National Statuary Hall at the U.S. Capitol, and your school, town, or organization can help give her a proper send-off! This flyer explains how you can host a traveling exhibit, teach your class about Martha, or request a community toolkit to help you plan an event. Click here to request the exhibit or toolkit!

Martha was one of 14 women who won election in 1896. From the state legislature to county government, they defied stereotypes and broke glass ceilings. Learn their stories in our virtual exhibit.
